Having a well-planned
itinerary is essential to experiencing the best of Walt Disney World
while avoiding long lines. Each of the resort's four parks have such a
large variety of attractions - planning ahead is key to having a
relaxing vacation once you arrive. The Animal Kingdom is Walt Disney
World's largest park in size, but can still be experienced in one day
with a good plan.
First of all, any guest visiting Walt Disney World should know about Disney's FastPass+. This system allows guests to select 3 FastPasses for rides at one park per day prior to arriving for their trip. Additional FastPasses can be obtained after using these initial 3. A FastPass allows guests to enter a separate line at an attraction. Because the number of FastPasses distributed is limited, the FastPass line will usually allow a much shorter wait than the regular stand-by line.
In order to experience most popular attractions, guests should plan to visit some high-volume attractions in the morning, when the crowds are low, and then visit other popular attractions with FastPass later in the day. At the Animal Kingdom, there are not a lot of attractions that require FastPass use. Guests can easily arrive early to visit one or two popular rides in the morning with little wait, and then use FastPasses for other rides that may have long waits in the afternoon. My highest priority attraction picks for FastPasses are: Kilimanjaro Safari, Kali River Rapids, and Expedition Everest. If you are visiting one of these attractions in the morning, or do not care to visit one of these attractions, DINOSAUR, Primeval Whirl, and Festival of the Lion King are also good choices.
Once the crowds have started building in the park in late morning, guests can focus on other, lower-wait attractions, such as It's Tough to be a Bug, Meet Disney Pals at Adventurer's Outpost, and the Wildlife Express Train. Guests can also visit other shows such as Flights of Wonder or Finding Nemo: The Musical, though arriving at least 20 minutes early for these shows is still recommended.
I typically recommend taking an afternoon break and then returning to the parks in the evening. The Animal Kingdom, however, may close as early as 5pm in the off-season. If this is the case, guests may be better off staying in the parks in the afternoon and using the evening to rest instead. Even with shortened hours, guests can still experience most major attractions at the Animal Kingdom with a thorough itinerary.
